I am not I.
That may sound strange to you, but if I were I, if I were a self, an identity, a personal self, how would this eternal bliss and peace be experienced? How would this universal unconditional love be experienced? It could not be, right? If the I, if the self, if any separation actually existed, then this eternal bliss and peace, this universal unconditional love, this could not be experienced.
And if you do experience this, and I hope you do, notice that what’s missing is this identity, this self, this sense of a self. Even if you only experience it for a very short time, notice that there is no self experiencing it. Later on, to try and understand why you’re experiencing this, you may say, “I experience this. There’s an I who experienced this.” But that’s just a memory, because in the moment that you experience it, there is no self, because what you’re experiencing is real, is reality. What we call fundamental or absolute reality, which to me is the only reality there is, so it’s not absolute or, you know, fundamental.
It just is.
It just is. The rest of it, separation, the dream of form, time and space and all that, is a dream. It’s an appearance of this one source, which has no I. So I am not I. When you’re absent that illusion of a self, that illusion of a separate self, the illusion of anything that could be separate, identity, all of that, then this source, this beingness, this one complete whole infinite, eternal, limitless source of all that exists, all that appears to exist is experienced And that’s what you are, but you are not an I.
It has no identity because there’s nothing but it. There’s nothing outside of it. It’s non-dual.
Now, you may know of Nisargadatta’s practice of I am, which is a wonderful practice, but it’s a preliminary practice. And the practice of I am, if you really hold to what this practice is, it’s I am, period.
Nothing after that.
I am.
Not, you don’t add a person. I am a person. I am a human. I am me. I am I. You don’t add that. Just I am, period. Hard stop. Nothing after that So what you experience when you do that practice, I am, is you experience a state of being, of presence, of am-ness, of beingness. And without the I being something, there’s nothing to identify with, right?
You can identify with I am a person, I am a being, I am someone, I am something. You can identify with that, but you can’t identify with just I am.
Because I loses all meaning in that after a while. You experience that, right? There’s just pure being, and the I is an irrelevant addition added on that has nothing to do with it at all. There’s just am, just being.
And in that being, you notice this eternal bliss, which is just the state of being. This eternal peace, which is just the state of being. This absolute unconditional love, which is just the state of being, just reality. When you add an I to it, an identity, you cannot feel that full completeness, that full eternal bliss and peace and absolute unconditional love.
You cannot experience that with an I. The I distracts you from it. The I is sort of the barrier that prevents you from experiencing this, which is what you actually are. You’re not an I. You’re not an identity. You’re not a separate being. There are no separate beings. There’s only this with appearances, things appearing out of it, but nothing ever other than it.
And it’s 100% complete unto itself. It needs nothing. Appearances appear, but they don’t change it. They don’t distract from it. They don’t take away from it. They have no effect on it whatsoever. It remains always as it is.
And this is what you are. You’re just not a you.
I am not an I.
I am not I. I am not a self.
You may have heard Ramana Maharshi, a wonderful, awakened teacher, fully awakened teacher, call this the Self with a capital S. But the Self with a capital S has no I. It has no self. The small s self is identity. The large S Self, and calls it THE Self, not my self, but THE Self.
The Self is the only self there is. This is the source. This is the substance. This is the totality of all there is. It’s just a name for it. Because it has no identity, it really has no name. No name sticks to it. In the experience, the absence of self, the absence of identity, the fullness of reality, there’s no names.
There isn’t a name Self or God or Consciousness or anything else, not in that experience. It’s absent all that illusion, the illusion of names, the illusion of identity.
It’s free of that.
It’s liberated from that. This is what it means, Liberation, Moksha, to be free of the dream and experience the eternal bliss of reality Which is. This is just another name.
We call it eternal bliss. Is bliss, peace, and unconditional love separate things? No, they’re not. The source, being, plus bliss, plus peace, plus love? No, it’s all one. It’s undifferentiated oneness, so why give it a name, bliss? Because when you don’t experience it, those are pointers to point you to, “Oh, that would be okay.I might like that eternal bliss.”
Well, of course you do. Of course you do.
But the reality of it is we don’t separate out, it simply is. Bliss is not something added or a thing. It’s just being.
It just is.
What they call in the Bible peace beyond understanding isn’t something called peace.
It just is.
And unconditional love is simply the absence of the illusion of separation. That’s all it is. It’s the absence of illusion. It’s not a thing called love. It’s the absence of illusion. We use those words, those names, to point to it.
Does it help to point to it?
Probably not. We’ve been pointing to it for thousands of years, and how many people are awake?
Not many.
But inside, you are this, whether you realize it or not, whether you awaken to it, the reality of what you are or not, it doesn’t change anything.
You are this.
While you think you’re a person, while you think you’re a separate self, while you have an identity, the reality of what you are is still here.
Nothing has changed.
The appearances change all the time, don’t they? Everything in appearance changes.
And if you still have an attachment, an identity as a person, you do not experience eternal bliss, do you? You experience a changeable range of feelings and emotions and sensations, and even identities. But this is unchanging. It never changes. This is your True Self, your True Nature. Not an identity, not something you can, the absence of identity, the absence of the illusion of a self, the absence of the illusion of an I.
There is no I.
I is an identity. I is a I, me, mine, and, in reality, that has never existed, nor ever could. There’s only this.
I am not I.
And yet I am.
Not as an I.
But I am. Not as an I, just as this. Just as this, because that’s all that does exist.
And that’s Liberation. That’s freedom. Freedom from illusion, freedom from a dream.
It may seem challenging and difficult to be free of it, right? To you, people give you a name, and they call you a name, and you feel this is me. I’m feeling something, therefore I’m feeling it. I’m perceiving something, therefore I’m perceiving it. And your thought is filled with I thoughts, but that doesn’t make any of it real.
Society says it’s real, but that doesn’t make it real. Science says it’s real. Neuroscience says it’s real. Psychology says it’s real. Religion says it’s real. But none of that makes it real. Those are all based on the illusion, on the dream of separation.
There would be no language without the illusion of separation. There would be no words. There would be no thoughts. So to experience this, it’s the absence of all that, the absence of the illusion.
The illusion cannot change truth, cannot change reality.
But it can distract you from it and it does, doesn’t it?
So when attention is no longer on any of the distractions, I, me, identity, things, name, form, when it’s no longer on any of that, then there’s just this.
This eternal bliss, eternal peace, eternal love.
Eternal being.
Infinite, eternal, and limitless.
It has no name. It doesn’t have the name I. It doesn’t have the name God. It doesn’t have the name Consciousness, or any other name.
It just is.
And just is, is bliss, peace, eternal and conditional love.
That’s the real you. That’s the true you. Not as a person, not as an identity, not as an I, but as what is when all that illusion has stopped distracting you.
Isn’t it wonderful?
