We all love stories. We read them in books, watch them in movies, and share our personal stories with friends. Stories are not only for entertainment but also the primary way we learn about life and who we are.
We love stories, but sometimes our personal stories cause us great pain. There’s the story of not being good enough, the story of failure, the story of victimhood, the story of separation and many others. The therapeutic approach to healing these stories is to dig deeply into these stories and try to change them to a more pleasant story. But that’s not really necessary or particularly effective.
The important thing is realizing that these stories are stories. And a story is just a story. It is not truth. When we believe a story, any story, is truth we’re in trouble. We’re believing something is true that is not true. This always leads to suffering, even when the story is pleasant.
So the first step is realizing what we believe to be true is just a story and that no story can be true. Truth is in the present moment. It is all around us and in us. It is us. But it cannot be confined and limited to any story.
Truth is life without a story. And this is our great freedom, salvation and awakening.
